Food — What is It and What is it For?

Genesis 1:29 –  And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

We know the answer to that question, but can we answer it solely from God’s Word? Read on to find out…

Our Genesis verse tells us God made food for us. Now you may think, “Duh!” But do you follow that in your diet? Do you buy God’s food or man’s food? What’s the difference??

Well, an apple, cherries, pistachio nuts, milk, eggs, butter, meat, tea, water, etc. are God’s food. A bag of chips, a double-whipped latte, french fries, soda, Gatorade, frozen TV dinners with 86 ingredients are man’s food. Which group do you think is made for your body? Which group do you think would make and keep you healthy?

What is the purpose of food? To just satisfy our hunger and taste buds and gorge ourselves? Or to be fuel for our bodies so that we may be and stay healthy our entire life? Can it be both, or do you find your grocery cart with a mixture of, “Well, these seven items are for my health; they don’t taste the best and I don’t feel happy buying them, and its hard to eat them consistently at home- yuck! But then these twelve other items I really love, they make me feel happy when I buy them and it’s hard not to eat them all at once- yes!”

Wouldn’t it be great if healthy, essential foods also tasted great and we delighted in buying and eating them? Well, welcome to God’s food!

I find it funny that they advertise food. Why? We all need it and eat it daily. Did they market food back in the 60’s or prior? Did they need to? Hmm…

Think in terms of raw, unadulterated, natural foods verses packaged, processed, homogenized foods. That’s a good, simply guide.

How close is this food item I’m about to put in my mouth is what God made or man has adulterated?

Think in terms of ‘cleanse or clog, live or die’. How much water content does this food have? Do I digest it easily, or does it take several days to pass? Is it a light food (a pear) or dense (loaded baked potato)? Light, high water content, natural, raw food is more alive than heavy, dense, cooked, processed foods.

Also, think in terms of raw verses cooked. What percentage of your diet of raw/natural vs. cooked? Do you often have meals that take only a few minutes, if not seconds, to prepare? Grab an orange and banana for breakfast? Some oatmeal or granola? Or does your breakfast take a half hour to measure, mix, and cook?

In addition, think in terms of alive vs. dead food. An apple is alive; lasagna is dead. Fruits, veggies, and nuts are alive while french fries, soda, chicken Alfredo and noodles are dead.

When you fill up your car with gas (fuel) it goes. When you fill up your body with food (fuel) do you get energy or do you have to take a nap?

John 8:32 – And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Consider the first three letters of the word ‘diet’ – d-i-e. Do you consider going on a diet death? Like the last thing you want to do? Do you think God designed food/eating that way? Of course not. God is our Jehovah Jireh; our sufficiency. He made food for us, and because He is a good God, He make it taste great.

Instead of using your ever-failing will power or self-control try God’s truth instead; know the Truth of food and trust in the Holy Spirit (if you’re a believer) to set you free from the bondage of your cravings, taste buds, and fleshly desires for dead, processed, man-made food. For example, I do not consider donuts food so when I see them I have absolutely no desire to consume them, hence no fleshy self-control or willpower is needed- the Truth has set me free!

As best as you can, eat God’s pure, raw, natural foods (cooked meat, veggies, etc. is fine) and just watch the results. Restored health, weight loss (if needed), vigor, feeling awake and alive and energetic, and a more content disposition are all yours for the asking! Then you can thank Your Creator- the God of Moses, Abraham, and Jacob! The God of your salvation! The everlasting God, full of lovingkindness!

I did that back on July 28, 1998 at age 38 for one month. The results were simply amazing! Praise God! My addictions to fast food and soda simply dropped away. God changed my taste buds to enjoy more of His food. I ate huge tasty salads for dinner that left me feeling full, satisfied, and content without any cravings. I remember going to bed feeling completely content and not hungry, yet I could feel that my stomach was not full or bursting at the seams. And then I’d wake up feeling content, not hungry, awake, alert, ‘a morning person’, energetic, and not bloated or constipated. Wow! What a feeling! I lost a few pounds that I didn’t really need to lose; and needed about six-nine hours less of sleep per week!

Not to mention the abundant health that naturally follows. I rarely get colds, headaches, etc. No arthritis, on-going aching bones or muscles, etc. This results in vastly reduced health care costs. I’m free from aspirin, Tylenol, medications, etc. Now I know some have genetic or hereditary predispositions, however that doesn’t mean your health can’t improve at all- it can.

That was at age 38 and today at 62 I still feel the same with as much youth and vigor- praise God!

So study and enjoy Scripture regarding food; renew your mind, change what you eat; trust God; and enjoy health!

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
